Remarks & Notes |
What I think is a CP transfer to UP's South St. Paul Yard is seen crossing the Robert Street Lift Bridge in St. Paul. The Robert Street Lift Bridge was completed in 1913 by the Chicago Great Western Railroad. The bridge is 940 feet long, and now under control from Union Pacific. The bridge is one of only a small handful of vertical lift bridges spanning the Mississippi River. The others I can think of are in Hastings Minnesota, Burlington Iowa, and Hannibal Missouri.
In 1997 the Mississippi River reached the bottom of the span. The Union Pacific spotted hopper cars filled with rocks on the bridge to help anchor the bridge in place and keep it from getting washed away by the rising river water. |
