When Wisconsin Central was formed in 1987 it needed a lot of motive power, some of which was supplied by Soo Line. However, yard and industrial switching was an important part of WC service, and they had to reach out to other sources to build a fleet of reliable switch engine power. SW1200 no. 1232 was built in 1966 for Texas & Pacific, and ended up on WC's roster. The lettering on the hood is somewhat unique compared to most units. No. 1234 was originally built for Houston Belt in 1966, also an SW 1200. Its lettering is larger and more bold, but still a different font than used on road power.
