In 1960, the Strasburg Rail Road made the now-legendary decision to bring steam back to its roster, and the 0-6-0 that it purchased from the Canadian National would become the first steam locomotive to return to passenger service. Strasburg 31 would be the sole steamer on the roster until it was joined by PRR 1223 in 1965. I rode behind and even posed for a picture in the cab of 31 as a pre-schooler in the early 1960’s, and it was the first loco on Strasburg’s rooster that I would photograph. During that encounter, the venerable Baldwin approaches the station area on a fall afternoon in 1976.
