"Pump Train at Castle Hill"
At exactly midnight on April 2nd, 2021, one of New York City Transit's Pump Trains, led by Kawasaki R65 "PC02", passes Castle Hill Ave station on the IRT Pelham Line. The train is on its way to Westchester Yard from 38th Street Yard for periodic inspections.
Pump Trains are used to extract water from flooded tunnels, trackbeds and other areas throughout the NYC subway system. This specific train consists of old R17, R21 and R22 "reach" cars and one of three R65 "pump" cars on the tail end. The R65 pump cars (numbered PC01-PC03) were constructed from R62/R62A shells around 1989 by Kawasaki. They feature 3 diesel powered pumps and lots of piping capable of removing 1,500 gallons of water per minute.
