Per wiki, the East Boston Greenway lies on a right of way Conrail abandoned between Lovell Street and the East Boston docks in the 1970s. Residents tried to clean up the tracks for use as a greenbelt in 1978, although local business leaders desired to reuse it as a haul road. Conrail donated that section to The Trust for Public Land in 1997. In 2007, after eight years of construction, the East Boston Greenway was opened on the corridor. I bike on it daily - the caboose is a vestige of the old days!
