For many years prior to the 1972 merger with IC, RS-1s were workhorses for GM&O around Montgomery, handling switching, transfers and the daily turn to Union Camp near Prattville. By 1975, in spite of the fact that ICG had repainted a few of the Alcos, their days were numbered. So, joy mixed with dread as I watched and photographed the usual trio hit the bottom of Dosterville hill and head for the Alabama River bridge just ahead.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
