N&W Class J #611 and Southern J Class #542 stand guard inside the North Carolina Transportation Museum yard in Spencer, NC as part of a NCTM sponsored night photo charter on May 1st, 2021. A "smoke bomb" was added to #542 to give the illusion that it is operating under steam. Built in 1903 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, #542 spent her remaining days operating in 1953 here in Spencer, NC as a yard engine for the Southern. #542 was officially retired in July 1953 after 50 years of revenue service.
