Former Rio Grande K-36 Mikado No. 482 is getting an overhaul at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad’s roundhouse and shop at Durango, Colorado, on August 30, 2021. In the stall next to the 2-8-2 is the “Slim Princess,” Southern Pacific narrow gauge 4-6-0 No. 18 that is being leased in 2021 from the Eastern California Museum in Independence, California. As an oil burner, it was also used to train crews on the D&SNG on oil-firing a locomotive in 2018-2019. Since that time, the railroad has done a total rebuild of K-37 No. 493, converting it, as well as K-36 No. 480 and K-28 No. 473, to burn oil. As part of its overhaul, No. 482 will also be converted to an oil burner.
