First East Side Access Trains. While New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, MTA LIRR President Philip Eng and other dignitaries recently visited MTA East Side Access riding on a Kawasaki built M9, this is far from the first train to operate at ESA. During its construction, a narrow gauge railroad was built and trains were used to transport trains carrying supplies through the site. As seen on February 10, 2016, a Mining Equipment Ltd. (Durango, Colorado) engine sits in the West Cavern prior to the separation between the upper and lower levels being constructed in the station at Grand Central Terminal. These tracks have since been removed and standard gauge tracks with third rail are now in place.
