Wisconsin Central train 51 thunders over the crossing with Wisconsin & Southern at Slinger, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of April 14, 1997. The structure on the right advertises locally-famous Storck Brewery. Built in 1868 in Schleisingersville (later shortened to Slinger—thank goodness), the brewery finally closed in 1958. Most of the brewery complex was torn down in the following years, except the lone surviving structure, the kegging house seen in this photo. Interestingly, during the U.S. Prohibition from 1920 to 1933, Storck officially made ice creme, but still produced beer on the sly. Fathers would take their children down to Storck, treating them to some really good ice creme, while discreetly having a brew or two.
