UP 3883 an SD70M leads a south bound mainifest train across Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Bridge, aka Pit River Bridge. Above the train is the 4 lane Interstate 5, and below, the seemingly ever shrinking Lake Shasta.
The Pit River bridge is the only interstate bridge owned by the Federal Government. Built in 1942 as part of the Shasta Lake Reservoir system, it is 3588 feet long for the freeway and 2754 feet long for the railroad. It rises some 500' above the old Pit River bed and is the highest double decked bridge in the U.S. Interestingly it is at the halfway mark of I5. There are plans to transfer ownership in 2040 to the State of California and plans to replace or refurbish the bridge. A new highway only bridge could be built just to the east.
