Santa Fe bought 40 EMD F45s in mid-1968, mostly for freight service, although the last 20 had steam lines and could be found pulling passenger trains for a few years too. An F45 is essentially a cowled SD45, utilizing the same 3,600 hp 20-cylinder 645 engine, but the F45 was also nearly two feet longer. On March 3, 1994, Santa Fe F45 No. 5974 rests in California sunshine at the railroad’s locomotive facility at Bakersfield.
