After over a decade of absence, steam returned to the East Broad Top Railroad as EBT 16 (2-8-2, Baldwin, 1916) was restored in time for the 2023 Winter Spectacular. In 1956, regular operations on the EBT ceased and the railroad was sold to the Kovalchick Corporation with plans to be scrapped. But the for Kovalchick did not scrap anything, instead basically freezing everything in place until it began to operate as a tourist railroad. The volunteers of the Friends of the East Broad Top who kept the hope alive when the railroad shut down again in 2011 played a big part in the 2020 announcement of the formation of the East Broad Top Foundation to restore the equipment, trackage and buildings. On Sunday, February 19, 2023, it all came together for a second day to close out a very successful weekend as EBT 16 began the day with a photo freight special for the public. The vintage sign for the tourist railroad is visible to the left as the photo freight heads up the track parallel to Route 522.
