Remarks & Notes
The Graham Legacy. In a scene not imagined by the Erie Railroad when it constructed Moodna Viaduct in Salisbury Mills, New York between 1906 and 1909 as part of its freight only Graham Line, MTA Metro-North Railroad GP40PH-2 4906 (née-EMDX 25, GP40) led Train 55 towards Port Jervis, New York on July 15, 2022. Metro-North assumed responsibility for the West Of Hudson commuter lines upon its inception, and abandoned the Main Line and moved the trains to the Graham Line between Highland Mills and Guymard, New York on April 18, 1983. Significant reasons to make this change to the line designed by Erie's chief engineer James Graham included that there are no grade crossings on this section snd its grade and curves are appreciably more gradual than the Main Line. While the Main Line did go straight through the population centers, this caused trains operate at much slower speeds and limited the amount of land around stations that would be available for parking lots and other passenger amenities. This locomotive is unique creation of the then Conrail Juniata Shops, being 4 feet longer than similar models that were rebuilt for NJ Transit.
