Remarks & Notes
Inclement weather was not enough to deter fans from visiting the URHS "Boonton Yard Open House" event where a cosmetically restored EL 3372 was unveiled to the public. NJ Transit was kind enough to display their NJ DOT-painted GP40PH-2 4101 at the event. Both units wear the NJ DOT "bluebird" paint scheme which debuted on the first U34CH delivered to Erie Lackawanna in 1970. 3372 was built in April 1971 and was retired in 1994 when it was set aside for preservation. 4101 was built in October 1968 and delivered to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. It remains in revenue service, hauling New Jersey commuters for 55 years and counting. It's fitting that Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 4877 was also part of this scene as it, too, served NJ Transit briefly in the early 1980s. Perhaps 4877 was the original NJT "heritage unit" having been painted in PRR's Tuscan 5-stripe scheme in 1981. It was retired from active service in October 1983 but was thankfully retained for preservation. The red nose of M&E 19 really stood out on this gray day, visible through the open doors of the shop building.
