Acela 2 At The Bronx River Bascules. While deadheading from Boston, Massachusetts to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as Amtrak Train 885, Alstom Acela 2 Train Set 8 (AMTK 2118/2146) passes through Starlight Park in the Bronx, New York on Thursday, May 30, 2024. An hour later, Train Set 12 would make its way through the same bridge in the opposite direction as it headed to Boston to take its place and allow for ongoing crew and mechanical staff training. The park was originally called Starlight Park in 1920 when it opened on the site of the former estate of William Waldorf Astor as an amusement park with space for events. After the park closed prior to World War II, the area fell into disrepair. After it was condemned, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation would ultimately renovate the whole area for the use of the public, and has continued to expand its footprint. The Bronx River Bascules was built by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad and opened in 1908. At the time, it was simply designated as “bridge number 3.40", but later took on the more descriptive geographic name.
The Northeast Corridor cuts through four New York counties on its brief stretch to the Connecticut Line east of Port Chester. There are several photo opportunities along the route.
