Remarks & Notes
Budd Leader. On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, while making a equipment move, Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA NYCT Subway/New York Transit Museum R-11 8013 (Budd, 1949) made a rare appearance on the road. This car is a unique survivor in the New York Transit Museum collection. The train composed of R-16 6387 (ACF, 1955), R-10 3184 (ACF, 1948, 1948 Paint Scheme), and R-10 3189 (ACF, 1948, World’s Fair Paint Scheme) is seen a the Shepherd Avenue Station in Brooklyn, New York on the C Line. The wooden bench is not a replica but an original piece of IND history. When it was built by Budd in 1949, it was a revolutionary design. The car body was made of stainless steel, with features including underseat heaters and "precipitron" sterilizing lamps to promote cleanliness. While only 10 were constructed, many of its ideas would carry on in the design of future car orders. The relationship with Budd would ultimately produce the 600 car R-32 order a little over a decade later, shifting from paint to the stainless steel exterior as the new standard.
