In 1834, Andrew Jackson was President, America consisted of 24 states, and the Long Island Rail Road Company was chartered as part of a transportation link between New York and Boston. Today, the LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in the country, and the lifeline of the Island. This morning, the railroad's "Greenport Scoot", as well as the train that connected with the Scoot in Ronkonkoma, ran with special commemorative drumheads for the 190th anniversary season. The trip culminated in Greenport, the railroad's original eastern terminus, where both the 190th anniversary of the railroad and the 180th anniversary of service to Greenport were commemorated. The train is seen here in Holbrook, just a few minutes out of its origin in Ronkonkoma.
