RF&P had a small derailment in the yard at Fredericksburg, VA during the early morning hours of March 6, 1978 when Train No. 105 was making a set off. By daylight a wreck train had arrived from Richmond with 250 ton Industrial Brownhoist derrick No. 1 to clean up the mess. No. 1 was an antique in more than one way. First, it was still steam powered, even at this late date. Second, it did not have hydraulic out riggers. Literally, every time it needed to be moved to make a lift, the out riggers had to be manually blocked up with wooden blocks. This is the duty being performed by the employees on the ground at the front of the derrick. It was a very time consuming task. In several years No. 1 would be gone, its responsibilities assumed by contractors with bulldozers and sidewinders.
