A southbound CSX unit coal train was grinding up Duff Mountain north of Chaska, TN on October 24, 1990, led by leased ATSF C30-7 No. 8148. I remember how disappointed I was when the train emerged from the tunnel and crossed Hickory Creek. I was hoping for a Seaboard System U30C. Time has a way of changing one's perspective. I shot other L&N and Seaboard System U30Cs, but never got another action shot of a unit in the "Kodachrome" paint scheme. Today, I am thankful No. 8148 emerged from the tunnel in the lead on that warm October day.
