Steamscape: Perry's Pond. The daily train from Antonito to Chama has just departed Cumbres Pass and begun the hour-long, downhill drift toward its destination. After crossing Highway 17 in Coxo, Colorado, the train passes one of the prettiest spots on the entire line: Perry's Pond. Apparently named in honor of photographer, Otto Perry, this pond not only can yield a pretty reflection of the passing train, but of the landmark Windy Point in the background. Although a light breeze produced a slight ripple on the pond this day, the reflection of 488 and the mountain she just conquered was indeed quite remarkable.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
