A special train by the Clinchfield was run on August 19th, 1971. from Erwin, TN. to Altapass, NC. The train was for members of the NRHS East Tennessee Chapter, and for the excursion, the famous Clinchfield "1 Spot" took the point with two coaches. On board of the train included noted Clinchfield historian Ken Marsh and former Trains Magazine editor J. David Ingles. The "1 Spot" was prominently operated by the two men in the photo, Ed and George Hatcher; Ed was the engineer and fitness fanatic George was the fireman for the little 10 wheeler. Here, they pose for a shot in Green Mountain, NC. while servicing the locomotive prior to leaving back for Erwin after conducting photo run-bys. 35mm slide from my collection, photographer unknown.
