A V&T steam powered freight out of Carson City, NV arrives on the scene early one frigid February morning led by McCloud River Railroad transplant, 2-8-2 #18. Before the train arrives at Gold Hill, a quarter mile ahead, it must first transverse the 300 foot-deep fill bridging an old mining excavation known as Overman Pit. The pit had been dug after the railroad ceased operations but was later filled in the process of restoring the line for tourist operations.
