Union Pacific EMD SD40-2 No. 3299 undergoes a SD40N transformation in the rebuild program at Jenks Shop in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The “N” in the SD40N designation comes from the NEXSYS control system by ZTR Control Systems used by UP in the rebuild to replace the older EMD Dash 2 component cards and system. UP also installs a remanufactured prime mover, along with reconditioned main generator, traction motors, trucks and other major components during the process. The cab is completely rebuilt, replacing worn out and rusted portions, and adding new doors, air conditioning, PTC capability and rewired electrical cabinets. Another important aspect of the rebuild is that the locomotive becomes compliant with Tier 0+ standards required for all locomotives built from 1973 to 1992. On May 18, 2015, this SD40-2 “snoot” gets more work done outdoors near the north transfer table and is well on its way to becoming a “new” SD40N.
