A San Luis and Rio Grande engineer oils around San Luis Central 2-8-0 No. 1 at the SLC yard in Monte Vista, Colorado. SLC owned only one steam locomotive early in its history—Baldwin 2-8-0 No. 1—that was bought new in 1913 and retired in 1955. To celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the railroad on September 1, 2013, they operated a passenger train on the 13-mile line from Monte Vista to Center in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. To add to the festivities, neighbor San Luis and Rio Grande relettered and renumbered their 2-8-0 No. 18, to SLC No. 1, which was used as power for the special train.
