Classic 2-Foot Freight. WW&F Locomotive #9 displays the classic lines of a Maine 2-Foot Forney as she races south toward the tiny flag stop in Alna Center, just over 6 miles from her eventual destination at the seacoast town of Wiscasset. The 18-Ton Number 9 was built in 1891 by Maine's Portland Company, the 622nd steam locomotive to emerge from the erecting shops on the Portland waterfront. She was also one of only ten 2-foot gauge locomotives to be built in Portland. Of the 5 surviving Maine 2-foot locomotives, she's the only one built before 1900 and arguably the prettiest of the group.
A note about the photo location... One of the most open spots on the WW&F Museum trackage, this spot is known as "Albee's Field." It is part of a large farm complex on the east side of the line, just a few hundred yards north of Alna Center Station. Just after sunrise on a sunny day, this is one of the most amazing shots on the current WW&F.
