Keeping up with snow on the Sierra has been apart of railroading on the mountain since the rails of the Central Pacific arrived in the 1860s. Methods have come and gone, and those that have worked have been improved and modernized over the years by Central Pacific successors Southern Pacific and later Union Pacific, however ultimately it is the willingness and hard working spirit of their people who pull it all together. Originally built for the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific Jordan Spreader SPMW4030 is propelled by a pair of former SP snow service GP38-2s, clearing fresh Sierra Cement off the #1 track and down into the ravine below Lower Cascade Trestle amidst snow flurries.
