Steamscape: The Mount Washington Valley. With the vast landscape of the Mt. Washington Valley as a back-drop, MWRC #9 "Waumbek" slowly claws her way up the steep grade at Long Trestle, some 5,300 ft. above sea-level, en route to the summit of New England's highest peak, Mt. Washington. Although it is difficult to tell from this perspective, there is a very precipitous drop-off on the other side of this trestle. It's some 1,900 ft. down into what is known as Burt's Ravine. Passengers seated on that side of the coach had better not be squeamish about heights, or they'd best keep their eyes inside the car. Yeah, a derailment right here would be the stuff bad dreams are made of. Fortunately, in the 147-year history of the line, there has been only one serious derailment involving passengers, and VERY fortunately, it didn't happen here.
