The lead unit of this northbound Delaware & Hudson train began life as D&H RS3 4122. Although it still carries a lot of its RS3 lines, D&H 505 was outshopped in 1975 by Morrison-Knudsen as a significantly different locomotive. With a 2000 horsepower 251 prime mover and electrical components replacing the original 1600 hp 244, an upgraded air system, and a chopped nose, railfans called this class RS3m’s or RS3u’s, but redesigner and rebuilder M-K termed the rebuilds as TE56-4A.
A three builder lashup of diesels is not an everyday occurrence, but four builders is a truly rare occurrence. If one can accept that the 505 is no longer the Alco that it once was, and is now a product of Morrison-Knudsen, this a consist of the MK, an Alco C420, and EMD GP38-2, and two GE U23B’s has rarified air passing through its intakes.
