Steamscape: Windy Point from Perry's Pond. On a late summer afternoon, D&RGW 463 drifts down the 4% grade below Windy Point, passing the small beaver pond that has informally been named for Colorado Railroad Photographer, Otto Perry. The power today is a K-27 Class Mikado built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903. She's one of just two survivors of a class that once numbered 15 locomotives. Oddly, her only extant sister, the 464, operates today on Michigan's Huckleberry Railroad, a very long way from her home rails.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
