For reasons that I have been unable to determine, Amtrak found itself as the owner of a single Alco S2, originally U.S. Army 7110. The switcher, initially retaining its Army number, was assigned to duties at Washington Union Station, where it shared a lot of maintenance characteristics with the fleet of Washington Terminal RS1’s that were based there. Originally painted in the pointless arrow (Phase 1) scheme, the Alco later was renumbered 746, receiving a Phase 2 paint job. Here the roster anomaly shunts head-end cars around the station.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
