An ex-Interstate yard crew shoves three (Nos. 1, 2 and 3) of Westmoreland Coal's re-engined Alco S2's through Appalachia en route to Andover Yard. Interestingly, the units are now lettered PRC 1, PRC 2 and PRC 3; PRC presumably represents Powell River Corporation. By this August 1997 date, Westmoreland's Appalachia transloader had been idle approximately two years. In addition, the L&N's ex-CV main between Big Stone Gap and Norton had been rusting away for the last 10-11 years. If memory serves me correctly, there was speculation that PRC might consider obtaining the ex-L&N ROW through the area and offer service in an effort to counter what some coal operators considered higher-than-desired rates by NS. This speculation proved to be false; the fate of the units isn't known (at least not by me).
Photographs where trains and people mix, weather it's street running, plant switching or carrying a unit grain train out of an elevator, it will be put here.
