Late Afternoon Eastbound. A pair of elderly Rio Grande Southern Locomotives hustle a heavy freight east toward Durango in the fading afternoon sun. In this 2017 re-creation, our power line-up is led by D&RGW #315, an 1895-era C-18 Consolidation, which as far as we know, never ran on the "Southern", although some of her close sisters certainly did. Behind 315 is D&RGW #463, which on this day was masquerading as #455 in RGS paint. The 463 actually did do some running on the RGS as a loaner locomotive. This image was shot in the late afternoon on the curve just below Big Horn Peak, at around MP 299.6 on the present-day Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
