VIA Rail’s train No. 5, the Skeena, on the left, passes train No. 2, the Canadian, on the station track at Jasper, Alberta, on September 18, 2002. The Skeena is heading for the wye to turn the entire consist so it is ready to depart westbound later that afternoon. This is when Skeena and Canadian schedules connected at Jasper for ease of transferring trains, allowing a passenger to ride from Vancouver to Prince Rupert without a day or two layover at Jasper. Both are powered by GMD F40PH-2 locomotives specially designed for passenger service equipped with a 500 kW generator off the prime mover to power the passenger consist for lights, heat and cooling.
