"Last Day of the Upstairs Ticket Office at SPG "
It's June 6th, 2019 and after 25 years the upstairs Ticket Office/ Waiting Room at Springfield Union Station sees it's last customers before closing for good. This upstairs/ track level ticket office was opened by Amtrak in 1994 years after the 221,000-square foot main station building was closed due to low traffic and ridership numbers. That main station building has since been rebuilt and is now a transportation hub for Amtrak, CTrail & many bus companies prompting Amtrak to move the ticket office back downstairs.
In this photo, one of the last customers to use the old waiting room chats with a friend on the phone while waiting for the CTrail train to begin boarding at the crosswalk outside. In just a couple months the high level platform in the background will be placed in service.
