Electric cogwheel railcars Bhe 1/2 # 24 and # 28 of the Pilatus Bahn are running up on the 48.0 % grade through the donkey wall as trains CC 17a and 17b, on sight distance. The Pilatus Bahn was opened in 1889 and is by far the world's steepest cogwheel railway, using the unique Locher rack system with two lateral cogwheels that engage the rack from the side. In addition, there is a flange under the cogwheels that runs underneath the rack along a center guide rail, guiding the vehicle and making it impossible to climb out of the rack.
