Out and About.
NYNJ Rail 5101 leads a train down 1st Avenue, crossing one of the many switches to former warehouse sidings along the street. Due to the tight confines of the street and buildings, this switch branches off in the opposite direction of the warehouse, then curves back to cross the "main" before entering the warehouse.
These spurs were originally from when the street was double track, as part of the Bush Terminal. During reconstruction, the street section was singled due to decreased traffic, but the buildings could not allow the curves to be tightened and so these "jug handles" or "out and about" switches were developed.
