Rolling out of Rock Tunnel Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad 2-8-2 No. 489 leads an eastbound passenger train out of the east portal of Rock Tunnel between Osier, Colorado, and Toltec, New Mexico, on August 27, 2021. The square box behind the rear headlight is the “doghouse” used to shelter the head end brakeman. These tiny wood structures could be found on both standard and narrow gauge Rio Grande steam locomotives.
