A Blast to the Past - The 'Pepsi Can' heritage paint, which pays tribute to the early paint schemes found on Amtrak's fleet of Dash-8 locomotives, lives on shielding a P42 locomotive as Amtrak #3 splits through the historic Semaphore blades found at West Colmor, NM. This scene would have been rather common back in the late 80s/early 90s under original P32-8 power, with the same exact signals as they're seen today.
A number of factors played into this shot. For one, Amtrak #3 was over 4 hours late out of the Midwest. Due to multiple siding tracks out of service along the former transcon, the train lost another hour holding the main in Springer to allow Amtrak #4 to squeeze by, allowing the sun to swing over just enough to provide for a beautiful late afternoon shot of the train.
