CUSHING OK (September) 1977 — Katy GP40 217, a loaded car and a caboose are ready to return to Oklahoma City. The station was abandoned but still accessible. Papers were strewn everywhere. EMD built the 3,000 horsepower GP40 (b/n 35460) in November 1969. When Union Pacific acquired Katy the unit became UP 587. It was retired on Feb 28 1989. Utahrails.net reports, “MKT 217 was retired by UP due to wreck damage; sold to National Railway Equipment on 9 October 1991; sold to Nebraska Central 4203, Council Bluffs, Iowa.” The unit went to Grainbelt Corporation (Farmrail) in Oklahoma as No. 4204. Many times I use thedieselshop.us to research locomotives. A great site indeed. My photo.
