From this different perspective, which is located just around the corner from the usual Summit, CA photo vantage spot, one wonders why that connection (top center of Dave's photo) the Union Pacific put in, to the connect the BNSF to the ex-SP Colton Cutoff, was not done at Devore, where the two lines are parallel and at the same grade.

There is a connector down near Devore in Keenbrook. This one near the top makes for a very useful bypass especially of late with the construction ongoing. When a BNSF line has been shut down UP has diverted more Intermodals down thier own line.
