Great shot Ray! Pretty cool that these longer ZBRLC EB trains at Allard (West Bealville) are long enough to snake beyond Tunnel 2 and back towards Caliente. Also, thanks for climbing up so early in the morning. Without looking at the photo file EXIF data, I'd say you were up there at 8:30a in the morning for this shot?
I really gotta get down there to shoot these monster Z-trains. For others that may not know, the ZBRLC (Portland/Brooklyn, OR-LATC/Los Angeles, CA) as of late has been making a decent night pick-up at Lathrop, CA. This results in heavier long pig trains that are not built for the normally assigned 3 units of horsepower to make the fast climb up the Tehachapi mountain grade. Stall-outs seem to be happening once or twice a week on the pass.
As shown, the ZBRLC-26 in Ray's shot measured in at 7,188 feet long and 4,265 tons or a 2.9 HPT (Horsepower Per Ton) ratio, low but barely acceptable for a fast intermodal train.

Nice shot, Ray. Is it really that desolate there is it severely lacking rain?

Great shot Ray, one of my favorites.
