haha, nice catch! They usually are found in boxcars or the holes on grain cars!

Hey great shot! After seeing Mario hitching a ride on a coal train, I went to You Tube and watched the classic video of BORN IN EAST LA!
The hat makes the shot - almost looks posed.
Hope it wasn't a hot day! Those cars seem like they'd heat up pretty good.
Perfect shot & composition, as the guy looks back to the photographer !
Still a cheap way to take the train as it seems - if you don't get caught - and have no fear to get hurt !
Looks like he is going to Wyoming for the winter. He's probably wondering if you're a RR cop and will turn him in. Great commentary on a transportation method that has been with us a long time.
Thanks for the comments, had no idea this shot would be so popular! This was shot from an overpass, and the trespasser didn't notice us as he passed under. A friend yelled 'SMILE!' loud as he could, which made him look our direction long enough for this photo. He then quickly slid down in to the coal car.
My friend and I wondered one day, while a coal train was passing by, where a hobo would be if he was on a coal train. I can't think of a better way to answer that question!
I often see some of unwanted guest on many freight train, especially tank trains which are very popular over many persons who love to get a free ride. The have to be noticed to be prepare for bridges and tunnels.
For what he's wearing, he made a bad decision on what train to hop!!!
I have seen them on the Sherer coal train as it travels through Austell when the train was full. They lay on top of the coal where they make a little flat area and look comfortable.

Man that would be a dirty ride on an empty set of hoppers... the dust would be horrendous!
All we need now is "The Shack" running down the tops of cars...
Shack, from Emperor of the North, would have handled that rider. Wonder how cold it got when the sun went down. Nice catch Brian.
Yep, Shack would have taken care of him alright - "A Number 1" he isn't.
