I'm not surprised they were de-streamlined, it is ugly and bulbous compared to the A4s. Although, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

This looks a tiny bit like the K5s New York Central streamlined for the Mercury and, later, the James Whitcomb Riley. But, without a pilot on it, the bathtub look is a tiny bit better looking. It certainly is different.

I much prefer it without the streamlining. In fact, I'd love to see Norfolk Southern (in the US) bring Norfolk & Western 611 back for excursion service, but put together as a class J-1 (wartime, non-streamlined) locomotive.
