These big girls were everything everyone ever said they were, good or bad. I saw a pair of them at Solomon's Gap on a Westbound with heavy snow, high winds and a long, heavy train. They made it up the grade as easily as if it were 80 degrees and sunny.
At the other extreme, NE-1 arrived at Niagara Falls, and split the switch that led into the Lehigh Valley's Suspension Bridge/ 48th St. yard. The lead truck on the leader went through the switch OK, the trailing truck split the switch, and as the trailing unit's rear truck derailed, the leader's traction motors shorted out snarling all moves into Niagara Falls, except for moves into or out of Niagara Junction Railway's Foote Yard. The clean up took a while, needless to say, and Penn Central had no means to recover their expenses from this mess. The crew let their time run out and went to a nearby motel or their homes when their time ran out. They were OK and that was what truly mattered.

Wish I could have seen these units working thru Rochester Junction, but they were banished from the West end by the time I started watching the LV in 1974. Nice photo - love all that snow on the ends of both units.
