What would it be like to have an N&W 'J' running tests through the hills of P.a.? Sure would be neat to see. It's too bad the Pennsy didn't bite and aquire a few J's since the Pennsy was part owner of N&W! From what I've read, the PRR had so many K4's that they could doublehead trains and have the same amount tractive effort as one N&W J. So...no J's were purchased by the PRR. Ironically, the PRR ended up with their own 'J' class in the mid 40's with a 2-10-4 Lima design (with a tractive effort around 100,000 pounds). Nice black and white image of those massive N&W 'J' side rods!

In 1959, the N&W ran it's final trips with 611. On the 10/18/59 Washington DC-Norfolk VA roundtrip there was sustained 100mph running. With 611's rather small 70" drivers, I can only imagine what these rods looked like at that speed! More info on the great beast.
