Sid, In a way you are right, but I look at it this way. Just like an airplane these engines suffer from metal fatigue and at that point they become more of a hazzard than an asset. The best thing to do is cut them up so the metal can be reprocessed and tuned back into something useful. It is sad to see them go, however, it is better all the way around.

I am not sure that I want to buy into the metal fatigue argument, as far as any thing past the ability to provide on board power goes. C.S.X. has proven that old GP-30s have a very long service life when converted to road slugs used with powered units. Norfolk Southern is currently building their own fleet of road slugs from older units. What is sad is that the former Soo Line GP-30s rode on trade in Alco GE trucks with very powerful traction motors.
