That's just too cool, looks like it still has friction bearings as well.

Friction bearings outlawed a long time ago. There are roller bearings behind those lids.

Friction bearings are still legal to run, you just cannot interchange them.

If I'm not mistaken friction bearing are only outlawed for interchange but may be used on-line. I have never seen an application of roller bearings that retained the old covers. In fact I believe converted journals are no longer legal for interchange either. Any carknockers out the? I wish the would allow converted bearings with the old covers on historical equipment. For instance, I can tolerate a stoker and feed water heater on SOU 4501 but those little Timken roller bearing caps going around on the tender drive me berserk!

Did more checking on this. These plain bearing cars can still be taken in interchange,if the other carrier agrees,it's up to them,it's a rule by the AAR,not law.I have seen many times 50 ft. boxcars with old style journals,no lids, but roller bearings inside.First,I didn't know my former employer owned this thing, second,it might still have friction,or plain, bearings,it can still operate on Amtrak lines, but may or may not operate on someone else's track. It will be up to the other carrier.Never to old to learn Dept. here!
