I believe that is a South African Army mine resistant vehicle from the era when they were in and out of Angola (via Namibia) and during the Rhodesian civil war. Interesting rail application.

My 8 year old cousin looked at this thing and declared: "it eats faces".

South African Railways could do with a few of these to clear metal thieves off the right-of-way!!

It's not going anywhere fast. The rails are unconnected.

Bob Keller is mostly correct. The vehicle is a the mineproof steel body of a wheeled vehicle adapted for rail use. Various railroads in the region had similar contraptions - so-called "armoured Wickhams" - which were used to patrol vulnerable rail lines during the various regional bruhsfire wars and insurgencies. The V-shape of the body is designed to protect the occupants by deflecting an explosive blast away from the centre and the it worked extremely well on armoured vehicles. Whether this particular trolley saw any action is unclear.

I dont know Paul. That sounds too realistic. I agree with Seva's cousin. That thing definitely eats faces.
