Now let me see, didn't Amtrak give up this service, which made money, to concentrate on a service that doesn't. What's wrong with that picture? Does government have a fear of not wasting money?

Amtrak didn't 'give up' on the service, if I'm not mistaken the freight railroads threatened to sue because Amtrak provided a similar service to what they provided, the difference is they were mandated by law to give priority to Amtrak.

Amtrak could have won that suit. The railroad's don't provide similar service and haven't done so since the demise of express service on passenger trains. They should, but couldn't stay on a schedule if they had to. Despite all the "systems" with the cute management names, crisis management is the order of the day. I especially like the idea slipping the schedule four hours a day and calling it magic.

Freight Railroads do not offer LTL and have not for around 70 years. Stupid politicians again. The Big RR's probably threatened to take their lobbying $$$'s away.

Hmm, what I had seen was the the type was withdrawn for a combination of reasons with a couple among them being issues with the old but rebuilt REA trucks, and issues involving the additional time it took to handle the material handling cars.
